Wendy Sue Swanson
KEYNOTE SPEECH:

How Digital Health & Technology Transform Trust in Prevention

Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE, FAAP

As technology and media infuse the health space, we examined the opportunities of novel communication on improving wellbeing, accessible health care, and the experience of both prevention and treatment of disease. The advancement of technology combined with public health messaging is an increasingly important tactic for prevention strategies and immunization campaigns.

Dr. Swanson will explore the challenge at the confluence of rapid, technologic innovation, social media, misinformation, chatbots like ChatGPT on our health, lives and ultimately the trust we create with public health initiatives. As our lives continue to be shaped both by the effects of the pandemic and by technology, we can guide how our communities come to understand the benefit of vaccination and prevention strategies for their families.

You’ll explore and learn:

    • How and why technology and innovation outpaces the velocity of change in health care delivery
    • Hear guidance on how to embrace new tech to enhance what we do for our communities
    • Consider the ethics of novel tech like AI as it embeds into healthcare delivery and messaging
    • Understand how to solve problems amid the “infodemic” with ongoing challenges created by misinformation and distrust
    • Find credible online resources about immunization science and safety and be presented ideas for sharing resources across your communities.

Dr. Swanson will explore work she’s done in general pediatrics, immunization promotion, social media, television, digital health and innovation projects to provide ideas and stir thinking in your work. She’ll provide a way forward to improve your approach and provide examples to peak curiosity and solution-making. There will be lots of time for Q&A as well so the community of attendees can learn together.

Early Screening of the New Documentary Shot in the Arm

Directed by Academy Award Nominee, Scott Hamilton Kennedy (The Garden, Food Evolution) and Executive Produced by Neil DeGrasse Tyson this poignant and timely documentary  explores vaccine hesitancy historically and in the context of our modern pandemic.

“Scott’s de-masking of Robert Kennedy Jr. is a public service! SHOT IN THE ARM is a timely project that will save lives in the United States and around the world.” – Kathleen Hall Jamieson, PhD – University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication

Before anyone had heard of COVID-19, filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy (THE GARDEN, FOOD EVOLUTION) began investigating the global measles epidemic. Filming with top public health officials–including Tony Fauci–as well as rare interviews with anti-vaccine activists who were persuading parents by the millions to refuse vaccines for their children.

Then COVID-19 happened.

Acting quickly, Kennedy shifted his directorial eye to this once-in-a-century tragedy. Both skeptical and hopeful, SHOT IN THE ARM explores vaccine hesitancy historically and in the context of our modern pandemic. Can we replace cynicism with healthy curiosity and bridge the political divides that make us sick?

Attendees Participated in a Live Q&A

with the Director after the film to learn more about their findings, methodology, and public reception.
